If you are down to explore restaurants that are not French, go to Foxley!
Constantly being featured on BlogTO (Beloved Toronto restaurant hasn't served the same menu twice in almost 15 years, #51 of The city's 100 best restaurants and more), Foxley is our favourite place for bold flavours with Asian influence, exquisite plating, seasonal menu and an extensive wine list (YES! We have a number of items being listed there!).
Foxley was opened in 2007 by Chef Tom Thai, who moved from Vietnam to Canada with his family when he was 11, the youngest of 10 children. Tom worked in Canoe and opened his first restaurant Tempo before he opened Foxley.
We are glad to be able to do a short interview with Tom.
🍇 : Give three words to describe your restaurant.
Tom: Friendly, accessible, cozy.
🍇 : What’s your favourite dish on the menu?
Tom: It’s a tough question… I’d say it’s ceviche because it’s a fun dish to make, I can experiment with different ingredients that are in season, and the outcome of adding some Japanese twists to this South American dish is always surprising.
🍇 : If you were a wine region, what are you? Why?
Tom: Not Bordeaux, it’s traditional and stiff, this is not me. I think I’d be Southern France, perhaps southwest or Languedoc, they are more experimental, free-spirited. I like doing something fun and thinking out of the box.
🍇 : Favourite local winery?
Tom: Malivoire, I appreciate that they practise sustainable, organic farming.
🍇 : Hangover cure?
Tom: Ramen. When I was in Japan, after having too much to drink, we always went for ramen before going home.
We entirely agree with Tom’s description of his restaurant - friendly, accessible, cozy. Next time, when you are looking for a bistro for some good food that fills your soul, don’t forget to check out Foxley.
